"I make kitchen knives because they are the ones that get used. Every day, without exception."
Meet The Makers
Luiz Gustavo Gonçalves - Brazil
Luiz Gustavo Gonçalves grew up in a rural area outside Campinas, Brazil, surrounded by nature. An early hobby: building campfires at every possible opportunity. Having turned five years old, his uncle gave him his first knife. Paying it great respect, Luiz was proud to have never injured himself with that first edged tool entrusted to his care.
A disciplined personality together with a curious mind and varied interests, Luiz tended to learn things completely when he pursued a new calling. By thirteen he was selling computers. He went on to study dog training, DJing, and eventually photography, going on to graduate from college and work professionally in the field for thirteen years. Whatever he does, he does it with intention.
Knives came back into his life in 2010, when a search for sharpening information led him to an online forum, which led him to a bladesmithing class in a nearby city. He attended an introductory course in December of that year. By 2011 he was building his first workshop with the help of new friends from the knifemaking community. By 2012 he was exhibiting his own work.
At his first show as an exhibitor, Luiz met Jerry Fisk, one of the most respected bladesmiths in the world. After visiting Luiz's table, Fisk turned to his wife Lorraine, known to friends as Bob, and said: "This is the work of a future Mastersmith."
He won Best New Maker that same year.
Over the years that followed, working exclusively in carbon steel, Luiz became a fixture on awards stages at Brazil's leading knife shows, garnering more than twenty awards across culinary knives and other categories. In 2015 he began studying the artistry of damascus creation. In 2016 he traveled to Atlanta, passed his judging with the American Bladesmith Society, and earned the title of Journeyman Smith.
He has since earned the ABS's highest designation: Master Bladesmith. At the 2025 Blade Show in Atlanta, the largest knife show in the world, his work took Best Kitchen Knife. That same year, he was honored with the B.R. Hughes Award for the best knife presented by a new Mastersmith.
The knives he makes now are bold, technically rigorous, and unabashedly opulent. The campfire kid from Campinas has been building toward them his whole life.
