Kamil & Michal Hanuljak - Czech Republic
Inspired by traditional Japanese chef's knives and the artisans behind them, brothers Kamil & Michal Hanuljak craft one-of-a-kind culinary cutting tools from house-made damascus and carbon steel with beautiful, colorful reclaimed handles. Kamil, a student of artistic joinery and woodwork, and Michal, studying artistic blacksmithing, are sons of a metal fabricator and have had their hands dirty with steel dust since childhood. Both avid skateboarders (which we will get to later), Kamil spent time doing graphic design work after school while his brother spent time abroad. It was when they both came home to work in their father's workshop that their true calling was realized. First, making knives for themselves in their free time, it was this creative pursuit that guided them to the next phase of their artisan endeavors, and Hanuljak Knives was born in the Hloubětín area of Prague, Czech Republic after moving to the capital from their hometown of Brno. Today this talented team creates objects that for them represent freedom, using only raw materials, from simple carbon steels which are used to craft their own damascus, to the reclaimed skateboard handles that lend a unique, colorful, and nostalgic quality to each piece. Popular with home cooks and professional chefs alike, they are quickly becoming popular with us as well.
