The premise was simple. What came out of it was not.

Antoine forged this blade from a billet made in Austria by bladesmith and metallurgist Tobias Hangler: an ApexUltra tungsten-carbon core clad in wrought iron and nickel suminagashi. Low layer count, wide bands, bold contrast. Where some damascus is defined by nuance, this one announces itself. Light and dark move across the steel in broad, unhurried strokes, the wrought iron lending a depth and graphic weight that finer layer counts cannot replicate. At 260mm long with a heel that stands 62mm tall on the board, it is a full-size knife with real presence. The spine tapers from 3.8mm above the choil to 1.6mm at the midpoint, to 0.8mm an inch from the tip, thinning further still toward a fine, detail-oriented tip.

Timo built the handle: a western-style grip sculpted in vintage caramel paper micarta, warm and subtly striated, fitted with a stainless steel ferrule. Paper micarta of this age has already done some living, and it shows in the best way. At 7.9oz the knife carries weight without fatigue, balancing naturally in a full pinch grip.

Two makers, two countries, a third maker's steel at the core.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0735/1749/8643/files/chef-gyuto-timo-verschuren-netherlands-verschuren-x-kniamen-chef-260mm-1230906840.jpg?v=1775070489
