The strong, prevailing wind forces your growth inland, but you survive and thrive, hardy and beautiful. — Erik Gullikson

Forever inspired by the majestic timelessness of the Irish countryside, bladesmith Erik Gullikson has forged from steel an object of which he has only dreamed. Until now. A knife of extraordinary performance on one hand, and on the other, a visually striking depiction of the incalculable forces of nature that envelop Erik daily. This piece is named Gála, gale in Irish.

With one precise hammer blow at a time, what began as a single piece of carefully prepared five-layer material — consisting of the hawthorn in raw form and a vein of nickel over an ApexUltra tungsten-carbon steel core — was shaped and honed by Gullikson into a blade of limitless possibility. The pure nickel layer, used to inhibit carbon diffusion from the core steel, forms the ground from which the tree grows, and marks the approximate location where the bevel's geometry transitions to convex. The hawthorn's pure nickel branches, outstretched through their dark and stormy metallic habitat, flow organically by design, masking the nuances of Gullikson's blended hollow portion of the symmetrical compound geometry. As this concave stretch tapers toward the tip, the forward third blends to full walzschliff geometry to deliver a thin, nimble edge while maintaining strength. Meticulous planning and preparation ensured that neither form nor function were sacrificed. In all directions, from the rounded spine downward to the 265mm edge, and from the 58mm heel forward to the fine, needle-like tip, every attribute is purposeful. In Erik's words: "The countless considerations and precision required to get this to display as it does and still have a knife that is primarily a performer, makes this what I believe is my most complete piece to date, a true marriage of concept and technique."

Etched and polished to produce a dark yet intentionally hazy backdrop to the nickel and carbon alloys, the blade's finish elicits the low clouds and mood of the Irish coast. At the left side, as tang material swells into blade, a subtle rainbow of color adds to the depth of the story the object tells. Taken in hand, a cutting board at the ready, the fingers curl around the maker's interpretation of a classic octagonal wa handle of sculpted and beautifully textured bog oak. A carved ring of zirconium completes this singular object. His heart and soul forged forever into its very fabric, Gála spreads its wings and soars.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0735/1749/8643/files/chef-gyuto-erik-gullikson-ireland-gala-gyuto-265mm-1242932989.jpg?v=1781730254
