artemis-copper-chef-184mm
Artemis Copper Chef 184mm

Artemis ruled over the hunt and the wild lands it moved through in Greek myth, fierce protector of the animals she pursued and guardian of childbirth, the threshold where new life begins. She's a fitting presence on a knife that meets nature's raw material at the cutting board and turns it into something nourishing.

Silas Blacklow calls this build a first: the entire handle is drawn out from the same billet of 125Cr1 high-carbon steel as the blade itself, hammered and shaped in one continuous piece in a style we've called Monolithic in the past. At its center, that solid steel frame opens into a window filled with hand-raised copper, worked in relief into the figure of Artemis on one face and a spray of botanicals on the other, with a single fine silver inlay tracing a floating leaf through the scene. A few smaller silver inlays appear elsewhere across the steel frame, catching light without competing with the central relief.

The blade is differentially heat-treated, its hamon brought forward through etching and polishing to reveal the transition between fully hardened edge and the softer spine.

With a 38mm heel, the edge runs relatively flat without going fully straight, backed by a very thin, hard, precisely honed edge beneath beautifully shaped convex bevel geometry and a fine, needle-like tip ready for detail work. The spine narrows from a wide 5mm above the heel to 2.8mm at the midpoint and down to 1.6mm an inch from the tip before slimming further still for the most delicate cuts. Balancing right at the heel, it feels steady and weighted in the hand despite weighing only 5.5oz / 156g.

Artemis is raised in copper, worked by hand until she rose out of the plate, but the frame holding her in place is the same steel that does the cutting, drawn out in one unbroken piece from blade to butt. Two different materials meet at that window, shaped by the same two hands into a single, inseparable object.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0735/1749/8643/files/silas-blacklow-artemis-copper-chef-184mm-1255801810.jpg?v=1787691731
